This silver basin, known as a jian, was found in the second western chamber together with other washing utensils. 25 characters are incised on the side, recording its capacity, weight and function. The Shuowen jiezi dictionary describes a jian as a large water basin. Before bronze mirrors were in widespread use , jian were used to reflect the image. Jian were also used to store ice to cool food. Judging from its location in the tomb this silver basin was clearly used for bathing. However the inscription incised on it also includes the word mu, so it is likely this silver basin was also used for washing hair.
